The neighbourhood deli as a safe haven

When you walk into a neighbourhood deli, it’s a sensory experience, the sights and smells hit you instantly. The rich aroma of fresh espresso, stacks of cheese, meats and freshly cooked bagels. But beneath these familiar comforts of our daily service lies a philosophy deeply rooted in the history of the classic delicatessen. To us, a counter isn’t just a place to hand over a sandwich.

As we celebrate pride month, it’s viral to look beyond the rainbows and remember that the bond between delicatessens and the LGBTQ+ movement runs deep. Long before modern progress, in the mid 20th century, everyday public spaces were hostile to queer individuals. Standard bars and restaurants frequently refused service, and police harassment was a daily reality. In response, late night delicatessens and 24 hour diners stepped up as accidental sanctuaries. They operated on a quiet radical ethos that Flynn’s empowers to its core: Mind your own business and feed everyone.

From the historic 1966 ‘Sip in’ at Julius' over a lunch counter to the crowded deli booths of Greenwich Village and the Castro where ACT UP and the Gay Liberation Front fueled up on pastrami and coffee to organise movements, delis have always provided the literal nourishment for revolution. When the AIDS crisis devastated our communities in the 1980s, it was the local chefs, deli owners and hospitality workers who cooked and delivered hot meals to homebound neighbours when the rest of the world turned its back.

Pride Beyond June

At Flynn’s, we believe that true inclusivity cannot be seasonal. Placing a rainbow flag in our window for thirty days in June means nothing if our doors arent intentionally wide open every single day of the year. For us, hospitality is an act of community care. We strive to create an environment where our staff bring their whole, authentic selves to work and where every guest, no matter how they identify or who they love, can sit at our table and feel safe.

Inclusivity also means being intentional about where we spend our dollars and whose stories we lift up. Our shelves are a reflection of our values, which is why we proudly champion LGBTQ+ makers, farmers, and artisans year round.
