Producer Story
Butler, Nephew & Co. was founded in 1730 in Oporto by H. Burmester and John Nash, initially trading as Burmester, Nash & Co. Like many of the great port houses of the time, it operated as both a merchant and shipper. Following a series of partnerships and family successions, the firm became Butler, Nephew & Co. in 1829 and built a reputation for crafting high-quality ports.

In the 1950s the house was acquired by Gonzalez Byass, and since 1979, has been under the careful stewardship of Stephen Christie. With a renewed focus on aged tawnies and white ports, the winery has continued to grow in prestige. After visiting Porto in early 2024, we helped facilitate the brand's introduction to the UK market—bringing these superb ports to our shelves for the first time.
